Our research on generative adversarial networks, the machinery behind pseudo-realistic images. Project Bell pointed the same understanding in the opposite direction: given a piece of media, decide whether a model made it.
It was an early instance of the question we now work on directly. The artifact is machine-made; something has to decide whether to believe it. In 2018 the substrate was images. It turned out to matter more for results than for pictures.
